Gaijin Izakaya Restaurant, Zurich

My personal highlight: Snacking & Drinking in the first Izakaya in Zurich! Discovering delicious chicken grilled on the Konro Charcoal-Grill, paired with Japanese Swiss craft beer

Welcome to the cosy Izakaya in town with modern and traditional Japanese dishes to share!

This food discovery was very special for me since I had the fun to have my friend, mixologist and photographer Kasper with me! Usually, I have to wait for every bite I take until my food pics are done, this time I could immerse myself into the culinary experience right away!

For the opening night, Chef Dan Shu and his staff created a special selection of dishes to get a complete picture of their food concept. My absolute favourite dishes were the Chicken Karaage – Cabbage Salad, Homemade Japanese Mayo, the LUMA Wagyu Beef – Grilled Cabbage, Baby Lotus, Onsen Egg and the dessert: Churros in a super special shape tender and creamy with some ginger sour cream and berries. Truly amazing the pairing with a Gaijin Draught Beer made with some delicious blooming sake. Find a selection of sake, wines and soju, too.

A simple and cosy Izakaya

The ambience at Gaijin is simple but cosy, not too much decor, the light is a bit dark and ideal for a chilled friends’ night out or a date.

The menu at Gaijin

Choose from around 30 small dishes and share them with friends. That way you can try the diversity of dishes they offer. I love the way the menu card is divided! Under “Fire” you will find everything from the Konro Charcoal-Grill, “Hot” presents warm appetizers like Chicken Karaage and “Cold” are cold dishes like the Taco California.

Do you like to be surprised by the boss: choose the option “Omakase“! This means as much as “I leave it to the chef” and has a long tradition in Japan. This choice costs 60 CHF. Single dishes start at 6 CHF up to 45 CHF depending on your choice. There is a variety of veggie options, too! I loved the Miso Shoyu roasted eggplants with garlic chips and a delicious sake sauce and the hot & cold cucumbers.

Address: Gaijin Izakaja Resaurant, Birmensdorferstrasse 5, 8004 Zürich, T: 044 482 22 00

Misoga Korean restaurant

Korean Food

Korean food

Welcome to Korea. I love this place! As the name says, it’s the house of smiles. And I am sure you will feel the same. If you never tried the Bulgogi, the time has come now. It’s a Korean style barbecued beef; tender, with fresh veggies. It comes in a colourful bouquet of delicious sides like the famous kimchi, pickled veggies, rice and bean paste.

The ambience is very relaxed. If you don’t know how to eat your Bulgogi the lovely staff will help you to wrap it right in the fresh green lettuce leaf!

Bibimbap is signature Korean dish. The word literally means “mixed rice”. Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chili pepper paste). The ingredients of Bibimbap are stirred together thoroughly with a spoon just before eating.

You can also order your food for takeaway!

Read the Miss Miu Story to better understand why Zurich has this place and where the design and food influences come from!

Atsuko Yamano, a talented Japanese thoroughbred cook and drummer of a punk-pop band, moved from Tokyo to neighboring South Korea in the 90s during the Asian crisis and fell in love with the tattoo artist and former bartender Park Tae-Soo during one of her jam sessions. Both didn’t have much money and tried to stay afloat with part-time jobs. Park, however, had a well-to-do aunt who was sympathetic to him – Aunt Miss Miu. The three of them spent a lot of time together and always fantasized about their own restaurant. Miss Miu was always very mysterious.

One day Miss Miu, Atsuko and Park met in front of an empty big hotel. Miss Miu typed, without hesitation, a four-digit number combination into the code lock and the door opened. Everything had already broken down a bit and you could see that it must have looked very pompous in former times, but was no longer inhabited for a long time. A former partner of Miss Miu ran this hotel some time ago and also ran a small restaurant kitchen. The business flourished, but the crisis had also hit him and he had to close his restaurant. After that he disappeared without leaving a trace and since that day the premises were yellowing.

Miss Miu asked Park and Atsuko if they could imagine opening a restaurant here together. She knew the landlord and still had some money on her side. The two looked each other briefly in the shining eyes. They were not allowed to miss such an opportunity. The three were a perfect team. Atsuko, with her many years of experience in the kitchen and her extravagant way of cooking, put together a selection of menus that were both enthusiastic and astounding. She loved her local Japanese cuisine and at the same time had enjoyed the new Korean dishes so much that she wildly combined both cuisines.

Miss Miu turned out to be a true design genius. The young and extraverted service staff flashed around between the tables with Miss Miu’s freaked out dresses, tattoos from Park and cheeky sayings and left a unique impression on the guests with their personality, which echoed weeks after the visit and made them laugh. The bartender past of Park turned out to be the icing on the cake. He developed completely in the art of cocktails and created drinks in flower vases, with shaved ice and with flavours that enraptured when tasting.

Kinkhao Thai Restaurant Zurich

My personal highlight: Welcome to the living room style tavolata where random people sit really close together and enjoy traditional Thai Food

As a food blogger I am always snooping around in town when it comes to new openings. I became aware of this little gem Kinkhao via Instagram.
It is located in the former Liquid at Zwinglistrasse 12.

Kinkhao means food in Thai explains Laor, Chrisoph’s wife and co-owner Laor. More than it describes everything that is experienced around food. The hospitality, the sharing and the feeling of good mood. All this takes place at Kinkhao sitting around several large tables. The ambience is cozy the Interieur simple decorated with attention to details as some typical local Thai decors.

About the menu

The motto is: One menu one a price. Enjoy a 4, 5 or 6 course menu with or without wine accompaniment. Prices start from 40 CHF for the 4 course menu without wine accompaniment. Absolutely try the menu including the wine, because the Spanish wine pairs super tasty with the spicy food!

We start eating!

Super tasty fish burger on a stick and a spicy sweet sauce. The sticks are a homage to the famous Thai streetfood Christoph explains to me and like all dishes this speciality comes from Laor’s homeland, the northeast of Thailand. The burgers are made from certified tilapita fish, kefir lime leaves, snake bean pieces and some egg really super tasty.
Next comes: a truly spicy thai salad next. I am kind of not used to eat so spicy, but very happy to have the super delicious red wine next to me!

The absolutely highlight for me is the next dish: A perch fillet nicely packed in a palm leaf, perfectly aromatized with coconut milk, Curry und Lime leafs. As a side we get sticky rice typical Thai style and some thin sliced shitake mushrooms, mint, lime juice and coriander with semolina that give the ideal touch and crunchiness to the dish. With all of that comes a Nam Phrik Oong, which is an intensely flavoured tomatoes with chili. Yes, spicy again!

After that we go for three different home made curries.
Hot & Spicy green curry with veggies, yellow curry with chicken and the red curry with pork. The green curry was absolutely to spicy but I did really love very much the pork curry, the meat was super tender and flavorful.

The lovely evening ended with a home made chocolate, coffee coconut cake made from Chrisoph’s son and an amaro Averna. Yes, accompanied by one of the songs Christoph and me like from the one and only Lucio Dalla.
Ciao ragazzi del Kinkhao! A prestissimo. Khup kun ka!

Pinatubo Philippine Restaurant Zurich

My personal highlight: The cross-cultural mix reflects best in food: trying the first time ever a dynamite spring roll Philippine Style!

“Stay hungry and foolish” is doubtless my motto of live! Foodblogging is made 100%  for me. My curious mind brought me to discover Pinatubo Restaurant – a Philippine Restaurant located at Klingenstrasse 33 close to Limmatplatz in Zurich. My travels did not make it to this magic country, yet, this is going to be my first experience of Philippine Food.

Julius Pozon the manager, introduces me to their culture and food. The Philippine Cuisine is influenced by a tremendous number of countries. China is one of the influencers, this explains spring rolls on the menu. America seems to have an other impact, too. I find buffalo wings and banana ketchup used in the preparation. Even similarities to Indonesian and Spanish food! The most famous Philippine dish is called Lechon (roasted pig). Ingredients that catch my attention are toyo (soy sauce) and patis (fish sauce), as well as the method of stir frying and making savory soup bases. Due to the countries’ vast coastlines there is of course an abundance of excellent seafood, too.

All that said, lets discover their menu! For all Indonesia lover, check my travel section here. Get inspired about the beauty of South East Asia. Traveling to the Philippine Islands is on my bucket list!

Signature dishes: Roasted crispy deep-fried pork, beef stew or milkfish?

Are you planning a big group dinner, absolutely go for the Boddle fight! Sounds weird? A Boddle fight originates from the Philippine Military. A big pile of food served in the middle of a long table. It’s originally eaten by hand. It used to symbolize brotherhood and equality in the military. The word fight refers to the act of grabbing and eating as much food as possible before it runs out.

The Buddle fight menu is the best choice to get an introduction into the Philippine Cuisine!

As starters find chicken buffalo wings Philippine Style, dynamite spring rolls that come in a long green pepper (not spicy) filled with minced beef and cheddar cheese.

Try main dishes as the Tapsilog: Beef stripes with a fried egg on top, cucumber, tomato and fried rice. The dish called Caldreta is a good option for a beef stew with veggies and rice. Must try: The Philippine Pilsener Beer San Miguel (obviously a Spanish influence) and for dessert: fried banana roll with ice cream and caramel sauce.

Lunch Menu are available for 11– 15.50 CHF, take away. The boddle fight for 78 CHF (2 P), main dishes starting with 18.50 CHF

Opening hours: Lunch buffet (no à la carte) Monday – Friday 11:30-14:00,
À la Carte Monday – Sunday 18:00-22:00

Yu-An Japanese Restaurant, Zurich

sushiroll

My personal highlight: Sitting 3 hours at the counter at Yu-An Zurich observing the owner Ken creating finger licking inside out rolls

Being a food blogger doesn’t mean you have to try every place in town. In my case I try to focus on selected quality food only and on the authenticity of a place. A further criteria for me is the experience which includes the kindness of the staff and a comfortable surrounding. My good nose brought me to Stauffacher this month at the Japanese Restaurant Yu-An located at Werdstrasse 66, Zurich.

Feel the Izakaya Style at Yu-An

In the 1600ies Japanese sake shops started to serve customers skewers and other light bites. This was the beginning of izakayas – literally meaning “sitting in a sake shop”. Nowadays you find these places all over Japan as after-work watering holes that offer an inexpensive and kind of informal dining. This is a philosophy that I guess you truly feel at Yu-An and Kokoro in Zurich.

I knew about the very successfully, Gault-Milliau awarded Japanese Restaurant Kokoro, located in a side street of Langstrasse (since 2015) managed by the same owner Ken Groh and his partner Mioh Suguro. Why not discovering the second project Yu-An run through my mind.

The traditional Izakaya Food Philosophy is a main component of both restaurants. That is what I understand and feel there. You share different warm and cold dishes from seafood to beef and sushi rolls or sashimi.

What to point out at Yu-An ?

The ambience

Dining here throws you back to Japan not only because of the traditional food but also because of the originality of the interior. Some of the picture that hang at the wall contain original rarities of Japanese magazines that belonged to Ken’s grandfather. Sitting at the counter observing the inside out rolls being prepared is something you have to experience. Hearing a Japanese conversation and the pleasant sound of the language makes my ears happy. ( I do no understand a word though).

The food

You have a great selection of warm and cold dishes, all prepared fresh with premium quality products by Chef Tatsunori and the staff. I suggest to try a degustation menu and share plates. You find weekly specials for meat lovers and vegetarians.

My absolute favorites: Their inside out rolls! Choose the Tiger roll that comes with a tempura fried tender shrimp, cucumber inside and outside a spicy tuna avocado. The Salmon Aburi roll has some salmon, ginger, cucumber and shiso, outside a salmon flambé and home made sauce. If you like beef, absolutely choose the Entrecôte Teriyaki roll or the Beef roll flambé! Food porn included.

Guess what makes Yu-An special in town is the really superb choice of rolls!

What else to try beside inside out rolls? Pork and Soft Shell Crab Karage, please!

Go for some seafood! The Soft Shell Karage is a crab marinated and fried. Its taste is very light and spicy.
Add a meat plate: The Buta Kakuni is a slow-coked piece of pork breast with a creamy fat layer melting as butter on the palate. It is spiced up just perfect with a Japanese mustard.

For lunch: Try their Poké bowls, the menu comes with a soup or salad. The one with the onsen egg is a must try! Otherwise get a gourmet lunch menu for CHF 46.5o. It comes with a miso soup, a small salad, sushi & sashimi, beef, salmon or shrimps in a hot pan and Japanese rice.

Opening hours: Tue – Fri  11:30 – 14:30, Tue – Sa  18:30 – 22:30

Address: Werdstrasse 66, 8004 Zürich, Kreis 4

Put Put Japanese Takeaway

putput

My personal highlight: Understanding that Japanese Curry is a real traditional food cooked at home, it brings the family together at one table

I am glad I found this cute little Japanese Takeaway in Zurich. It is located at Stauffacherstrasse 101 very close to Langstrasse. The place is a real Japanese bijou. Stepping inside the typical fancy Japanese Design stands out. Their charactere named “putput” is a cute chick in the manga style. You can admire it all around the shop. There are fancy putput objects as home made mugs or bags to purchase, too.

The owner Nao Shirato explains to me, that the food they serve is inspired by the recipes of her grandmother. That’s Japanese cuisine her family used to eat at home.

The curry base is a home made paste. Its taste is not comparable to a spicy Indian curry with coconut milk. I found this curry mild, thicker in the consistency.  The Potato inside where fingerlicking, a real value to my curry experience.

The choice of menu is simple. Different menus are available for vegetarians and non.

Try the super tasty home made Japanese Curry (veggie or chicken), the Gyudon bowl with beef, the Onigri (rice sandwich with meat, fish or veggie) or different buns filled with veggies, meat or azuki (sweet beans).  The home made ice tea is recommendable, too.
The miso soup tastes very authentic and comes with the main dish if you like. Choose the salad instead if this doesn’t match your choice.

Menu are available for 11.5o – 15.50 CHF. Get a bun for 6 CHF,  Gyudon 13.50-15.50 CHF, Onigiri 5.50 CHF

Yume Ramen Zurich

My personal highlight: Watching Chef Ben creating my miso ramen in the kitchen and explaining to me every detail about what is relevant to get elastic handmade ramen noodles and telling me that I need to slurp my soup to get the best taste

Food rumors are spreading so fast in our tiny city. It makes it very easy t to hear about the new places in town. Yume Ramen is now offering Ramen soups at Reitergasse 6, Zürich.

Behind Yume Ramen stands a heritage of Japanese Cuisine. Lorenz Muster, the Manager of Sala of Tokyo brought this concept to the city with the goal to introduce to Zurich People the authentic Japanese gastro pub lifestyle called Izakaya. In Japan people to stop by at this easy food bar for lunch or after work. The ambience at Yume Ramen is completely like that, easy and homy. The fact that a traditional Swiss “beiz” was here before having a bit of a 80’s and retro interior, makes that place even more authentic.

Chef Ben introduces me to the uniqueness of Yume Ramen. It’s the soup stock that is made fresh from scratch every day and cooked for hours either with pork bones or a veggie stock. The selection of ramen is variegated, guests appreciate that. Pork, Beef, Chicken or Veggie, all available on the menu.

The noodles are from Swiss natural flour (no transgenic crops!). They rest for a few days to mature the perfect taste and get knead by hand carefully. They serve up to 150 ramen soups per day, that is obviously the favorite dish of the guests.

Feeling the passion of Chef Ben and his staff is viral. You understand fast that people here love what they do. The result in your bowl is the prove.

The Yume Ramen menu

Enjoy a Japanese beer and fresh Ramen, Donburi or Otsumami appetizers. Take a Bento Boxes to go if you are in a hurry, meat or veggie. They make fresh home made lemonade with pure fruit pulp. I love the fact that it is not too sweet. Products are from best gastro suppliers.

In the evening the best choice are Otsumami. The variety of the appetizers is fantastic and perfect to share with friends. Get some advises from the lovely staff, they are happy to help you.

The quality/price ratio is absolutely okay. Ramen soups start with 19 CHF.

The selection of Japanese Whisky is the biggest available in Zurich. I am fascinated by the labels of the bottles! Ben recommends the brand Habiki or Nikea. Guests love the label Karuizawa.
