My personal highlight: Wesley’s dumplings are the best in town. Tasty, soft and authentic. Love the ginger touch.

Asia Fusion served as tapas

This is my absolute favorite place to eat dumplings in town. Wesley really knows how to make me happy. You find a good variety of food from Shanghai (hometown of Wesley), Hong Kong and Japan served as Tapas.

You can try bit of everything and share with your friends. I thinks it’s a great concept! This food is made with love. It’s a small restaurant so make sure you reserve a table in advance. It’s located close to Langstrasse at Josefstrasse 48, Zürich.

Kafischnaps

348s

My personal highlight: Wipkingen Ofeneier, don’t know any other place in town that makes them like they do.

Brunch, coffee, music, b&b

This place is in a urban and much liked area of Zurich in Kreis 1o. Its interior is easy and casual. The concept of having a large table where you can join other people if you’re coming alone is great.

The must tray on their menu are the Wipkinger Ofeneier, the Müsli is delicious, too. Everything is made of fresh and local ingredients. It’s a place to go for a drink afterwork, too, you meet people from the Kreis.

Kafischnaps is a good alternative to a hotel, if you have some friends staying over. They have lovely rooms! At weekends there are also live music performances .

Give it a try! It’s located at Kornhausstrasse 57 close to Schaffhauserplatz/Wipkingen.

Donuts hanging at the wall like design objects: Chök the chocolate kitchen

Barcelona: cultural and exquisite mediterranean pearl

Colorful stylish donuts hanging on the wall like art objects

Strolling through Barcelona without any plan, yes, this is me, but always following my nose. When I saw this colorful donuts hanging on the wall I didn’t hesitate more than five seconds and to get inside the shop.
You can present donuts as a desirable design object. I ordered a flower donut with cream inside, and eating it was a real ceremony! Me and my donut, amazing. But Chök has more to offer than just donuts. They create chocolate truffles that taste just hilarious.
After having eaten my colorful flower donut I joined the chocolate kitchen to see how the famous oreo truffles are made and of course got to taste the super fresh mixture.
The dow is a mix of sweet/salty butter and toffee and a unique oreo flavor. Loved it! But for the day I definitively had a maximum sugar boost!
Chök is available at local food events where they show up with food trucks.
Find more on their website www.choekbarcelona.com
Try it, you will love the place, the ambience and of course their donuts and chocolate truffles are outstanding!

My personal travel stories for Indonesia Part 1: Java

Why Indonesia captured my heart and soul and I keep on traveling there to discover its beauty  – Part 1: Traveling through Java.

Order your free ebook for more Indonesia travel stories.

Back in 2014 I decided to go for a backpack trip through Indonesia. I started my trip on the island of Java. In Bandung the absolute highlight was picking some strawberries from hand up in the highlands, watching how hand made tofu was produced in a cellar and eating best spicy crispy chicken legs in the streets of Yogyakarta packed in a piece of newspaper.

While walking alone through the colorful streets of Yogyakarta I bumped into a little market. A beautiful ancient lady laughed at me and spoke through her soul, she did not understand English but her eyes told me to taste her food. They prepare the most simple street food you can ever imagine and they invite you to try everything. After my market tour a bike Rikscha driver invited me to a city ride. I spent 4 hours of historical, cultural and culinary experiences I will never forget. No lonely planet can list, what beauty this city has to offer. I recommend spending 10-15 days in Java, 2 days in Yogyakarta at least.

Borobudur Temple – One of the world’s seven wonder

The absolute cultural highlight in Java is the visit of the Borobudur Temples. Borobudur temple is the world’s biggest Buddhist monument, an ancient site widely considered to be one of the world’s seven wonder. The ambience up here is magical, calming and inspiring.  The temple consists of a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms. At the top is a monumental stupa. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. The monument was restored with the help of UNESCO in the 1970s.

After your Yogyakarta visit plan enough time for some volcano hiking! I recommend 3-5 days.

Where to go after Yogyakarta – Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater

My travel continued by minibus to mount Bromo and the Ijen Crater that is south of Java very close to the Island of Bali. I knew before my travels, that Indonesia has to offer a complete program when it comes to nature and culture.

Mount Bromo was a smooth start. It stands tall at 2329 m and is one of the most iconic and most hiked mountain in Indonesia. The volcano is still active. You have group tours organizing your trip. I did it by myself.  The must do there is the sunrise hike. It takes about 1-2 hours hike to the first vantage point. Sun rises at 5.30am, so plan your time best to get there.

Where to sleep – Tour Organisator for your trip

You may find various guesthouses and basic hotels located around Mount Bromo. I found plenty of my accommodation through airbnb or through the local operator that organized our trekking trips. Most of them organize different tours through Java.

Ijen Crater – magical blue waters: the world’s largest highly acidic crater lake

Distance: 14km round trip hike. Duration: 3 to 5 hours depending on your fitness level.

After the first smooth hike to Mount Bromo a more challenging one going up to Ijen Crater was program of Day 3.  The hike up here is tuff but if you start around 4 am in the morning you have good time to get there to admire the sunrise. The highlight up at the crater is to admire the ‘blue fire’ in the dark. To see that the midnight tour is recommended.

The landscape  up here is out of this world. The flames appear at the base of Ijen Crater and are caused by sulphuric gas catching fire.

Island hopping from Malaysia to Koh Lipe

Sharing is caring! That’s how driving taxi made me meet the best travel buddies ever traveling to Koh Lipe Thailand

Crystal clear waters, delicious simple street food and plenty of lovely souls

What exciting days in Malaysia and Thailand! I experienced one of the most beautiful places on earth called: Koh Lipe Thailand! Turquoise water, sandy white beaches! The resort we stayed was magic. The Serendipity Beach Resorts, is an absolutely must do, once in a while to give oneself aCr Who would ever told me, that I would travel 10 days of my trip with two Belgian Moroccan guys? I can’t remember one night without laughing while hanging around with Hamid and Faouaz. It would take me hours to write down what we experienced together. And all of that began only because I wanted to share taxi costs to the airport to catch my flight to a beautiful city called Georgetown Penang.

Travel with a free spirit

You know what people out there, we should move at home how we move while we travel, with a free spirit and more openhearted. Life has so much beauty to offer and back home we kind of live stuck in our system, habits and routine. Life is unpredictable, that is why you should go with the flow of it.
A special thing I have to point out are the Malaysian people I met, all of them made our journey so beautiful, it’s an amazing friendly folk with much cultural mix (Indian, Chinese, Malaysian) and so much serene happy people always to help out. It feels good to be surrounded with love and peace!

No please, I don’t want KFC food

1. Two food related stories out of my journey. I had to eat at KFCs. OMG, the chicken was so so dead! Never again guys! 2. On one of our journeys the taxi driver stopped especially for us to buy us some fresh boiled corn cob! It was so delicious!

Where to sleep  and have Yoga in Malaysia & Thailand

Lots of super delicious street food wherever you walk! For these no link is available, you walk on the streets and follow your nose.

Singapore I give you a second chance

Discover Singapore also with a low budget – The Lovefoodish experience

I came back here to see a good friend that moved here from Zurich and guess what, this time I got really warm with the city.
My only touristic attraction on the program: The tree walk at Gardens by the bay. The view is unique up there. Entrance is about 28 SGD. It’s very touristy but kind of a must see, you will like it.

My top do do’s in Singapore: Food stalls, arabic district & china town

What Impressed me much are the hawker in the city where you get best and good priced local food. These food stalls are super clean,  the quality and variety of food is amazing. I had super delicious ramen soup and dumplings!
The arabic district and chinatown of course are a must, too. Just by case walking out of little india we found a great fancy shopping street with affordable vintage clothes.

Hipster Food at Timbre+

For foodies I recommend timbre+ a gastro park made in containers with 35 food stalls and live music. Europe, we need one of this, too!. The samurai pizza is a must try! You will have a explosion of flavors, pulled beef meet, caramelized onions, mozzarella cheese, dark deep fried dough, fingerlicking!
Said that. Use uber in Singapore, too. The driver give so much input about places to go and what to do.I experience them as kind of local guides so so lovely!
And yes of course there are several cool food places in shopping centers you can try out, too.
  • I recommend Din Tai Fung in the Paragon Shopping Centre. Really great dumplings.

Areas to stay during your trip:

  • China town or east coast! Nice nightlife with plenty of restaurants.

Volunteering in a cozy Spanish village

Yes, it is possible to travel with little money or even stay for free in an absolute tranquil and cozy ambient

Ever heard about a little village in Catalonia, not fare from Barcelona, called La Nou de Gaia? The village has 555 hearty, creative souls that take much care about their village life. The family I volunteered are 4 of these. They made my stay unforgettable. I had the chance to live in their cozy house by joining the workaway volunteering program. I spent a wonderful time of my life. The family and especially the little kids inspired me everyday and fed my mind with new ideas I am now working on back home in Zurich.

Feeling like visiting friends

Staying with the family felt like staying at home of some good friends for me. I had the opportunity to cook and play with the kids and take care of their house and discover great nature close by. Here in La Nou de Gaia the idea came up to offer kids cooking classes. We had two classes and they were so much fun. Read more on the kids food events in the section events.
I can recommend to everybody to do a workaway program. It will leave you memorable moments of joy and prepare you for other things in life you will need one day. Love life!
